Air Quality Program
Clean air has been a concern through history. The first air pollution control law was in England in 1273, it prohibited the burning of coal. The first execution under this law was in 1307. In the U. S. there were local ordinances to control smoke in the early 1800s. There have been air pollution disasters throughout the world that have left thousands dead and injured.
The Clean Air Act is our primary air quality control law. The goal of the Clean Air Act is to improve air quality in the United States. In 1970, the Clean Air Act established National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). In 1990 the Clean Air Act was amended. It is important to control air quality because air pollution makes you sick, can damage the environment, can damage property, an causes haze.
